Q

What did Edgell say about call centers?

A

Globalisastion has lead to the growth of outsourcing such as seen with call centers being based in India. These employees need to adjust their lives to fit into UK time zones and holidays by doing things such as working nights. They are also encouraged to hide the fact that they are calling from aboard which he calls “time space compression.” This threatens not only routine work but also highly qualified knowledge work, taking advantage of lower wages among highly skilled workers in countries like China and India. Knowledge work deals with ideas, information and analysis rather than making or distributing physical products eg doctors.

Q

How do Castells and Beck argue that globalization strengthens the power of the owners and weakens the workers power?

A

Capital is global but work is local which means that different parts of multinational companies are organised and coordinated across many companies while the workforce is organised within individual countries/factories. Labour is therefore disorganised and weak, working against the interests of the workforce. Transnational companies also have the ability too relocate their business to countries where labour is less regulated and cheaper.

Q

What did MacKinnon find?

A

Many people in local communities were deeply affected by globalisastion of labour through migration, especially from Eastern Europe and felt threatened and disempowered. This may lead to a hierarchy of whiteness creating tensions and divisions within communities.

Q

What did Atkinson come up with?

A

The idea of the dual labour market, the patterns of work in the UK are changing largely as a result of globalisastion which causes an increase in a divided workforce. There is the primary labour market which contains core workers, things like lawyers and then the secondary labour market which contains periphery workers which are less important such as retail workers.
