words, regions, cavities, membranes Flashcards
where is the cranial cavity?
in the brain
where is the dorsal-body cavity?
back of the back from from vertebral to cranial cavity
where is the vertebralcavity?
from the cranial cavity to the bottom of the spine(brain stem to spinal cord)
where is the thoracic cavity and what is inside it?
where the heart and lungs sit(lungs, trachea, heart, mediastinum, diaphragm)
what is the mediastatinum?
upper region of the thoracic cavity between the two lungs(heart also considered the pericardial mediastatinum)
where is the abdominal cavity and what is inside it?
located under thoracic cavity, (holds stomach intestines appendix, spleen, gallbladder, esophagus, colon, small intestine caecum)
where is the pelvic cavity?
under abdominal cavity in-between pelvis(holds reproductive organs)
what is the diaphragm?
muscle between thoracic and abdominal cavity(contracts releases with breathing)
what is the abdomino-pelvic cavity?
abdominal and pelvi cavity combined
what is the ventral body cavity?
holds thoracic and abdomino-pelvic cavity
where is the right hypochondriac region?
right side of abdominal cavity(cartilage of ribcage to bottom, right side of in-between ribcage)
where is the epigastric region?
in-between rib cage above belly button
where is the right lateral region?
end of ribcage to top of hip right of belly button
where Is the umbilical region?
diaphragm to top of hips, middle(belly button)
where is the pubic region?
below belly button end of penis to top of hips
where is the right inguinal region?
top of hip bone to ball and socket joint
what is a visceral membrane?
lining that covers each organ
what is the parietal membrane?
lines the walls of body cavities, thoracic
what is in-between the visceral and parietal membrane?
fluid-filled space
what is the Aorta?
large artery leaving the heart with oxygen rich blood
what does the right atrium do?
brings in “blue” blood - no oxygen in blood, then goes to
the right ventricle
what does the right ventricle do?
still “blue” blood, then moves into lungs, picks up oxygen and goes to left atrium
what does the left atrium do?
red blood(oxygen rich) from the lungs, then goes to left ventricle
what does the left ventricle do?
red blood leaves the heart from here (through aorta)
what is the duodenum?
structure that attaches the stomach to the small intestines (filled with enzymes from liver and pancreas)
what is the sternum?
solid chest bone which
ribs are attached to - in front of heart
what is the midline?
middle of the body
what is the medial?
towards the middle of the body
what is the lateral?
farther away from the midline(middle of body)
what does superior mean?
above another body part
what does inferior mean?
below another body part
what does anterior mean?
towards the front
what does posterior mean?
towards the back
what does bilateral mean?
two of each structures( two legs)
what does ipsilateral mean?
structures on the same side(right kidney and right leg)
what does contralateral mean?
structure on oppostie side(right leg contralateral to left leg)
what does proximal mean?
part that is attached closer to the trunk than another body part(elbow is proximal to wrist)
what does distal mean?
part that is attached farther away from the trunk than another body part(wrist is distal to the elbow)
what does superficial mean?
near the surface(skin)
what does deep mean?
more internal parts(internal organs)
