Word Production Flashcards
What is a lemma
Abstract word that contains only meaning and grammatical information and not phonological information
What does the two step in levelts model involve
1- activation of grammar for e.g. Dogs is a noun
2- concerns mapping the morpheme (smallest grammatical unit that carries meaning) to the sound form of the word
—–for example for mapping the morpheme, dogs has two morphemes- that it is a plural and a nouns
—– for mapping the morpheme to the sound/form of the word e.g. Dogs consists of 4 phonemes d.o.g.s
What is a morpheme
Smallest unit of meaning
What is a phoneme?
Smallest unit of sound
What is anomia
The disability of not being able to find the word to describe a particular thing
What’s are the strength of levelts 2 stage model?
- other evidence supports the notion that word production moves from lexical selection to morphological encoding to phonological encoding
- effective model that is testable
Criticisms of the 2 step model
1- focus on single word
2- much more interaction between processing stages than assumed
3- necessity of the lemma is questionable
What is denotation?
Core essential meaning
What is connotation
Emotional or evaluative associations
Why do we separate lexical semantic from conceptual semantic processing?
Translation
Imperfect mapping
Elasticity
What are the techniques for investigating lexical semantic processing?
Reaction time methods in production I.e naming things, picture naming, elaboration of words
Categorisation
Eye movements
Brain scanning
What are the empirical findings relating to lexical semantic processing?
Familiarity effects e.g. Frequency variable, psychologist would use behaviourism more than mechanic
Age of Acquisition effect- what age you first learnt word
Word-non word effects- words are faster
Neighbourhood words- similar words can confuse
What is a regularisation errors
Pronouncing irregular words wrongly example pint like mint
