The fundamental unit of each word establishes the meaning of the word—part to which modifying prefixes and suffixes are added
Root Word (mostly from Latin and Greek)
Short word part added before a root to modify its meaning
Prefix
Short word part or parts added at the end of a root to modify its meaning
Suffix
When a suffix begins with a consonant, a vowel (o is most common but it can be a, e, or i) is inserted between the root and the suffix to aid in pronunciation
Combining Forms
(A word cannot end in a combining form)
Eg. Neur+o+logy (Vowel is needed) or Neur-itis
Contain more than 1 root and sometimes other suffixes as well
Compound Words
Eg. Cardi+o+vascul+ar (this having more than 1 root)
Most medical words come from Greek and Latin and sometimes the original words and their meanings will be included in the dictionary descriptions. They can often help in learning the word.
