Where should the verb go in a German sentence?
The verb should always be the second idea in a German sentence.
Ich spiele Fußball (I play football)
The verb should always be kept second in a German sentence.
Ich spiele am Wochenende Fußball =
Am Wochenende spiele Ich Fußball
What should happen if a sentence contains 2 verbs?
One of the verbs should be sent to the end of the sentence.
Ich werde nach Deutschland fahren
(I will go to Germany)
What is meant by Time, Manner, Place?
When constructing a sentence in German, the ‘time’ clause comes first, followed by the ‘manner’ clause and then the ‘place’ clause.
Ich gehe heute abend mit meinen Freunden ins Kino
heute abend= this evening (time)
mit meinen Freunden=with my friends (manner)
ins Kino=to the cinema (place)
What effect may some conjunctions have on word order?
Some conjunctions send the verb to the end of the sentence.
Ich schwimme, weil ich sportlich bin
(I swim because I am sporty)
What is a subordinate clause?
A subordinate clause is dependent on a main clause and does not make sense on its own.
e.g. weil es 11 Uhr ist.
