What is a separable verb?
A separable verb is a verb that comprises a separable particle and a main verb
e.g. abfahren = to depart
What happens to separable verbs in the present tense?
The main verb is conjugated in the present tense and the separable particle is sent to the end of sentence.
abfahren = leave
Ich fahre um neuf Uhr ab
(I leave at 9 o’clock)

How is the perfect tense formed for separable verbs?
The past participle for the separable verb is formed by attaching the separable particle to the past participle of the main verb.
aufhören (to stop) … aufgehört
Er hat endlich aufgehört (he has finally stopped)
He wants to go back
(_zurück_fahren=to go back)
Er will _zurück_fahren
She went back to Berlin
(imperfect)
Sie fuhr nach Berlin zurück
fahren conjugated in the imperfect tense and zurück
has been separated and sent to the back of the sentence
I will go back tomorrow
Ich werde morgen _zurück_fahren
The future tense formed by conjugating werden and combining with the infinitive _zurück_fahren.
