What happens if the adjective comes after the noun ?
If the adjective goes after the noun, it doesn’t change to match the noun.
Der Apfel ist rot
rot (red) is the dictionary form of the adjective
What happens if the adjective comes before the noun ?
The end of the adjective must be changed to match the noun’s gender, number and case.
Ich habe rote Apfel
What happens to the adjective, when there is a hard ending in the noun or article?
The adjective takes a “soft” ending as follows:-
Masc__Fem__Neut__Plural
Nom -e -e - e -en
Acc -en -e -e -en
Gen -en -en -en -en
Dat -en -en -en -en
What happens when the adjective is preceded by the definite article and followed by the noun?
With a definite article, the adjective ending is always soft:
Masc__Fem Neut__Plural
Nom rote rote rote roten
Acc roten rote rote roten
Gen roten roten roten roten
Dat roten roten roten roten
What happens when the adjective is preceded by the indefinite article (or possesive adjective) and followed by the noun?
The adjective endings are the same except for the 3 places where the article has no hard ending and the adjective has to take it on:
Masc__Fem__Neut Plural
Nom roter roterotesroten
Acc roten roterotes roten
Gen rotenrotenrotenroten
_Dat_rotenrotenrotenroten
What happens when the adjective is not preceded by an article and is followed by the noun?
With no article, the adjective always takes on the hard ending, except in the three cases where it’s still there on the noun

What happens when a possesive adjective is placed before a noun?
The possesive adjectives ending must agree in gender, number and case with the noun.
This process is known as declension.
