How do you determine which is the correct relative pronoun to use?
- Determine the gender and number of the noun to which the pronoun refers
- Determine the role that the pronoun is playing in the clause and hence the required case.
e. g. Die Jungen, denen er eine Frage stellt, verstehen nicht.
Die Jungen is masculine plural and the role is dative, so use denen.
