Sight Words and Sight Word Vocabulary
Words we teach readers to know by heart. These words are words that have irregular patterns and are hard for the student to decode and blend.
Compound Words
Two base words put together to make a compound word such as firetruck.
Multi-Syllable Words
Words that have more than one syllable or “vowel sound”
Context/ Context Clues
Text surrounding a word or passage to help explain the meaning of a particular word or passage.
Semantic Clues
Involves the learners prior knowledge of language, text, media, and personal experiences.
Refers to the meaning in language that assists in comprehending text.
Derived from the meaning of words relating with the unknown word.
Syntactic Clues
Relates to the sentence structure/grammar of the English language.
EX: I can ride a _______. The last word will be a noun based on what is in the sentence.
Visual Clues
Objects, pictures, symbols. graphs, and even written words that provide a child with information about how to do something, or the meaning of something.
Word Analysis
The act of translating print into speech through the analysis of the letter-sound relationship.
Structural Word Analysis
Identifying words by analyzing the word such as identifying prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
Base Word
Words that are complete and can stand alone as a word.
Root Word
A word that does not have a prefix or suffix attached to it.
One can be added to change the meaning of the root word.
Its the main part of the word.
Morpheme
The smallest meaningful unit of a word.
Morphemic Structure
Viewing a word by its parts. Such as prefix, suffix, compound word, inflectional ending etc…
Grammer
The system of a language. The structure of how it works such as prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
Syntax
Arrangement of words and phases to create sentences.
