Stages of Reading Development
1: Awareness and Exploration
2: Experimental Reading and Writing
3: Early Reading and Writing
4: Transitional Reading and Writing
5: Independent and Productive Reading and Writing
Emergent Reader
In this stage students build the foundation for reading and writing by pretend reading, listening to stories and understanding from the words that print carries meaning, and start to notice enviromental print such as logos.
Early/Beginner Reader
These students can start to regonize sight words, understand that pictures carry meaning, start to retell, self monitor etc..
Transitional Reader
Read greater fluently, start to use cognitive and metacognitive strategies, summarize longer text.
Fluent Reader
Reads for purpose, understanding long text with meaning, reads for a variety of purposes
