Pre-Reading Strategies

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary
Preview materials to find unfamiliar words. Then define and discuss the meaning of the words. The child should then read the text with their new knowledge.
Scaffolding
Breaking learning up into chunks and providing a structure/tool with each chunk. Examples include:

Skimming
Intensive preview of a reading assignment to determine what it is about.
Scanning
Scanning the pages of a reading assignment with your eyes to find answers to questions.
Literal Comprehension
Understanding of the information and facts clearly stated in the story.
Inferential Comprehension
The ability to process what is read and the underlying meaning of what is read in the text.
Metacognition
The knowledge that one has about their cognition process.
Example:
A student knows their learning style.
A student knows what helps them to remember facts
Self-Monitoring
Ability of students to monitor reading by keeping track of how well they are comprehending the text
