Syllabication
The division of words into syllables.
Encoding
The process of hearing a sound and being able to write a symbol to represent the sound.
Decoding
Using letter sounds to pronounce written words.
Phonetic Spelling
Each letter represents one spoken sound.
Phonics Patterns
Follows specific patterns such as magic e, bossy r
Dipthongs aka Vowel Teams
Combine two vowels in a single syllable in which the sounds begin as one vowel and moves toward another.
Example: ow, oy
Consonant Cluster
Group of consonant that have no intervening vowel.
For example:
br, ch, dr
Trigraph
A single sound represented by three letters.
Example: tch and igh
Digraph
Two letters that make one sound.
Ex: Sh, Ch, Th, Ph
Short and Long Vowels
Short talks, Long Vowel say the names
Consonants and Vowels
Vowels: a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y
Consonants are any other letters
Graphemes
Letters the basic units of writing.
Phonogram
Also know as rimes are letter patterns that help form words families and rhyming words.
Ex: ad family.
bad, dad, sad, fad.
Encourage children to map speech sounds onto larger chunks of letters.
Phonics Generalization
Phonics rules taught to emergent readers to help them learn letter combination sounds.
Synthetic Phonics
Teaching sounds in isolation and then blending those sounds to form a word. Such as in the word cat.
