Word A Day (biological explanations) Flashcards
Genetics
Genes are DNA strands that produce instructions for physical features
Candidate genes
Specific genes that code for variations
Polygenic
A number of genes involved in a trait or condition, each one increasing the chance a fraction
Aetiologically heterogenous
Different combinations of genes can lead to a condition in different people
Mutation
Conditions such as schizophrenia can have a genetic origin without family history due to mutation of genes
Neural correlates
Research has shown a relationship between the function and structure of the brain with symptoms of schizophrenia
Dopamine hypothesis
The amount and activity of certain neurotransmitters have been associated it’s different conditions
Original dopamine hypothesis
High activity of dopamine in subcortical areas of the brain associated with schizophrenia and hallucinations
Updated dopamine hypothesis
Low dopamine, known as ‘hypodopaminergia’ in the brains cortex can explain dopamine. Low DA in the prefrontal cortex could explain cognition problems.
