Wood Structures Flashcards
What are the two classifications of wood
Hardwood and soft wood
What is the preferred wood in ac structures
Sitka spruce
What is laminated wood
Wood made by gluing several pieces together. The grain runs parallel to each other
What is ply wood
Several pieces of wood glued together. They run at 45 degrees then 90 degrees to each other.
What is annual rings
It’s an indication how strong the wood is. The closer the rings are the stronger the wood.
What is spring wood
This is the softer part of the wood, more porous, and lighter than summer wood
What is summer wood
Less porous, usually harder than spring wood.
What are the different types of approved glues
Plastic resin
Resorcinol
Epoxies( if faa approved)
What type of load is put on joints
Shear load
What is the percentage of mosture content in wood
12 percent
What is a gusset plate
A plate attached to 2 or more members of a truss structure. It strengthens the truss
What is decay
The break down of the wood fibers.
What is dry rot
Decomposing wood fibers caused by fungi
