Wood Processes Flashcards
Addition/fabrication
Traditional wood jointing
Dovetail Finger Housing Half lap Dowel Mortise and tenon
Dovetail - multi directional strength. Used for drawers
Finger - box construction
Housing - framework construction and shelving
Half lap - simple frames or boxes
Dowel - flat pack typically
Mortise and tenon - frame construction for tables and chairs
Component joining
KD fittings
What are they used for
2 ADV
Knock down fittings
Used for flat pack furniture
Easy to use with limited number of simple tools
Wide range of standardised KD fittings interchangeable. Used in wide range of p.
KD fittings
Modesty blocks Barrel nut and bolts Cam lock interconnectors Wood screws Coach bolts
Modesty blocks - small rigid polymer blocks that have moulded holes for screws, join blocks to panels. Used on cupboards and storage units
Barrel nut and bolts - cross dowel fitted in 1 of the pieces to be joined. Bolt inserted through other piece of timber and is tightened into cross dowel
Cam lock interconnectors - metal dowel into pieces. CAM is a disk that fits into pre drilled hole. Disk rotated with screw driver, the collar on the dowel locks into cam and pulls both pieces together. Used in bookcases where horizontal shelves attached to sides (bunk bed)
Wood screws - screw 2 pieces of wood. Top wood fired drilled, then is screwed into bottom which had a pilot hole that is thinner than thread.
Coach bolts - join wood pieces together. Under the head there’s a square piece that digs into the wood when tightened, which prevents bolt from rotating. Used in doors and street furniture eg wooden benches.
Forming processes
Lamination
What does it bond & how
What does it use to hold it in place
Steam bending
What does it use to allow it to be used on a former
ADV of this over laminating
Lamination:
Bonds material together
Uses veneer or thin manufacured board, can be glued together, bent over former = thicker board in shape of former
Held by clamps or vacuum bag when drying
Steam bending:
Combines heat and steam to make strips of wood pliable so it can be shaped over a former.
Wood placed in stream box where it absorbs steam. Then bent over a former and clamped till it dries.
Quicker & less wasteful than laminating, as u have to wait for glue to dry and parts need to be trimmed
Machine processes
Turning (3 types) and what do they each do
Milling
What type of job is it used for
2 Dis and 1 ADV
Routering
Turning:
Turning between centres - machine a spindle eg chair or table legs
Turning on a faceplate - machine items like domes or bowls
Turning in a chuck - used to grip item while being machined, eg drilling end of spindle.
Look at video of guy making cool stuff on lathes
Milling:
Used for small jobs eg prototyping or roughing it a small hole
Slow processes, don’t have large work area as CNC routers
Can be manual or CNC
Routering:
Used to machine slots or holes in wood, make decorative mouldings eg table tops
Can be manual plunge routers or CNC
