What they used for
How they modelled
A material comprised of 2 or more different dimensions
Moulded with layup method
Useful for sports equipment
Main
CFRP
GRP
Both are:
Lightweight, corrosion resistant, hard, tough, good compressive strength, low thermal expansion
CFRP - car bodies, helmets, fishing rods, tennis racquets, bicycle frame
GRP - boat hulls, kayak shells, train cabs, sports car body parts
Secondary
Tungsten carbide
Aluminium composite board
Concrete
Tungsten carbide - cutting tools eg drill bits, knives, router bits
Hard tough, resistant to high temps, corrosion resistant
Aluminium composite board - sound proofing panels in cars, buildings and boats, signage
Lightweight, rigid, tough, good vibration damping, good thermal and sound insulation, malleable
Concrete - pathways, beams, blocks, house foundations
High compressive strength, low tensile strength, easy to mould, few surface defects
Secondary
Reinforced concrete
Fibres cement
Engineered wood (glulam, glued laminated timber)
Reinforced concrete - buildings, bridge spans, retaining walls
High compressive & high tensile strength, consistency across structure, few surface defects, fire resistant
Fibres cement - suspended floors, complex geometric shapes, pathways
Lighter than reinforced concrete, hard tough, good at low temperatures and in freeze/thaw situations
Engineered wood (glulam, glued laminated timber) - beams, bridges, arches, decking, roof beams, rafters Good aesthetics, more lightweight than concrete alternatives, fire resistant, natural alternative to reinforced concrete, good structural stability, corrosion proof (Made of timber laminates and MF adhesive)
