Wood Finishing Terms Flashcards
The property causing one material to stick to another.
Adhesion
Coat applied which separates the substrate from contact with the topcoat.
Barrier Coat
When a dye color absorbs through the top layer.
Bleeding
A bluish haze of a film.
Bloom
A white, milky cast in a film caused by trapping moisture into the film.
Blushing
A reducer with a slower drying property.
Blush Retarder
The thickness of the viscosity of a coating while in liquid form.
Body
The ability of two items to stick to one another.
Bond
When a finish forms a crack or void.
Bridge
Method of filling in a defect in wood using a hot knife.
Burn In
The act of applying coat into the surface.
Coat
Any material applied to a surface leaving a protective layer.
Coating
Cracking of a finish due to cold temperature.
Cold Checking
When a coating applied tends to flow away from areas leaving them uncoated.
Crawling
Separation of layers due to lack of intercoat or substrate adhesion.
Delaminate
Fly speck spotting.
Distressing
A coloring material that dissolves completely in a system very transparent.
Dye
The elapsed time at which a coating has reached its optimum hardness.
Dry Hard
The loss of color due to exposure to light.
Fading
The color which is not significantly affected by exposure to light.
Fast to Light
Pock marks or craters that show up on finished surface.
Fish Eye
The point at which sprayed coating stops flowing.
Flash or Flash off
The addative that extends the “wet time” or flash of a sprayed brush coating.
Flash off Control Solvent
The temperature which a material will ignite to a source of ignition.
Flash Point
The act of very heavily applying a coating to the substrate.
Flood
The fluid sheeting and leveling of a coating.
Flow
A shellac base coating which is applied manually onto the surface.
French Polish
An oil-based pigmented treatment which is applied between lacquer coats.
Glaze
The shininess or reflectability of a surface.
Gloss or Sheen
Used in reference to coatings ans stains which are not capable of being mixed together.
Incompatible
The uncoated are of a surface which was missed unintentionally.
Holiday
The act of applying a coat which will smooth out a previously rough coating.
Leveling
The softening and repenetration of a previous coat.
Lifting
The solid material which is left after total solvent evaporation.
Non Volatile
The primary resin material used to produce lacquer.
Nitrocellulose
The degree of hiding a pigmented coating. The opposite of transparent.
Opaque
The rough surface of a film similar to the appearance of an orange skin.
Orange Peel
The finely ground, insoluble powder which contributes color to coating.
Pigment
The appearance of numerous small holes in a film.
Pinholeing
A coating which first applied to a bare surface.
Primer
To add solvent in order to thin a material to a workable thickness.
Reducer or Thinner
A lacquer or other coating formulated to give better filling and sandability.
Sanding Sealer
The surface or material to be coated.
Substrate
Clear enough to see through.
Transparent
Allows light tio pass through but nit clear enough to see through.
Translucent
The thickness of a coating in it liquid form.
Viscosity
The solvent portion of a coating.
Volatile
Very thin coat of shellac.
Washcoat
A term used to describe a color of a coating in its liquid form.
Water White
