Hardware and Metal Fittings Flashcards
a threaded metal, pin or rod, having a head at one end, designed to be inserted through holes in assembled parts and secured by a nut
Bolt
a square hexagonal/square metal block perforated w/ a threaded hole to fit around and secure a bolt or screw
Nut
placed before the nut and helps in securing the nut in place
Washer
metal fastener having a tapered, helically threaded shank and a slotted head, designed to be driven into wood or the like by turning
Screw
metal guides attached to drawers/ side walls of drawers
Drawer Guides
Screw used for knockdown Fittings
Allen
Screw that can never be unscrewed
Security Head
used for Drawer front knobs and pulls
drawer Pull Screws
a bolt w/ a machine-screw thread on one end and a lag-screw thread on the other
Hanger Bolts
a universal connector that is a heavy duty cam-action fastener for extremely strong joints
Heavy Duty Universal Connector
Metal inserts w/ threads that protect the wood or board’s screw slot
Threaded inserts
inserts that work especially well on thin materials (exposed veneer seating, plywood/boards)
Low Profile Threaded Insert
ideal choice for knockdown fittings when clamping is difficult on large assemblies; also great for permanent joints
Minifix KD Fittings
attached to the bottom of cabinets or chairs to protect from slipping
Glider & Glider Tack
hardware that has finish as a decorative and functional fitting for furniture or enhance function and appearance
Finishing Hardware
hardware that are concealed or hidden from view
Rough Hardware
vernacular term form Hinge
Bisagra
for movable joints to support and turn a door above a pivot consisting of 2 plates joined together by a pin
Hinges
one leaf mortised into the edge of a door and the other, mortised into the rabbet

Full Mortise Hinge
one leaf attached to the face of the door, other attached to the face of the door frame

Full Surface Hinge
one leaf mortised into the edge of a door
Hal-Mortise Hinge
one leaf attached to the face of the door
Half-surface Hinge
consists of 2 rectangular metal plates joined by a pin (removable)
Butt Hinge

hinge having a non removable pin
Fast pin Hinge

hinge having a removable pin w/c permits the 2 parts to be separated
Loose pin Hinge
continuous hinge up to 6’; diameter = 0.25M, 0.32 - 0.40M; length = 1.5 - 3M; most efficient hinge
Piano Hinge

a cross garnet hinge
T-shaped hinge w/ the crosspiece as the stationary member and the long stem being the movable leaf
T-Hinge

hinge consisting of a number of flat plates rotating about a central pin, w/ shoulders mortised into the door edge and doorframe so as to concealed when closed
Invisible Hinge

Glass Hinge
a device for securing a door, drawer or lid in position when closed, consisting of a bolt or combination of bolts propelled and withdrawn by a key or combination-operated mechanism
Locks
handles w/ screw
Bolt-in
Handles is embedded on face frame of drawer/cabinet
Flushed
mechanisms that are held in engaged position by friction
Friction Catchers
supports the shelves
Brackets
General purpose nail with a small head allowing head to be punched below timber surface and then filled. Suitable for framing, planking and cabinet work.
Bullet Head Nail
Large Flat head is to support material being fixed. For fixing metal sheeting, strapping, brackets, conduit, and pipe clips
Clout
for fixing large size timbers such as railway sleepers. Galvanised coated for extra protection against corrosion
Deck Spike
used in formwork applicattions and fastening temporary work - the second head is left exposed for easy removal and for attaching a string line
Duplex
for fixing fibre cement sheeting such as hardiflex and Villaboard to timber framing
Fibrecement
A longer nail than a clout, used mainly with soft woods and thin timber. For fencing, planking, crating, and projects where an immaculate finish isn’t necessary. The flat head stops the timber pulling over the head
Flat head Nail
used for fixing hardboard and fibre cement underlay sheeting to timber floors
Underlay
used for securing materials such as wood to brick or concrete. made of thick hardened steel or zinc w/ grooved or fluted shank
Masonry Nail
A flathead nail with a twisted shank, used w/ softwoods, which provides stronger holding power. Ideal for fences, crates and pallets
Pallet Nail
Fixes plasterboard to timber framing. has an annular thread for greater holding power in timber
cross of nail and screw
Plasterboard
for iron roofing and fencing. twisted shank provides greater holding power in soft timbers
Roofing Nail
for light ply, mdf, etc, where appearance is not the main factor and particularly where the panel needs tobe held firmly
Softsheet
used for marking points in bitumen and asphalt. large washer in galvanised finish
Surveyor
can be used forfixing textile materials to wood for example, fixing upholstery to furniture. very short w. relatively large head and very sharp point
Blue Cut Tack
A specially-designed flathead nail, which allows the head to be driven below the surface of the timber. A screw thread on the shaft adds extra holding power in soft timber. Ideal for decking, fences and pergolas.
Timbergrip
Useful for attaching netting or wire to timber posts and frames. an insulated version is often used to attachspeaker and telephone wires to timber
Staple
for attaching paneling to walls. has a low profile and usually a ringed shank. mostly used in conjunction w/ an adhesive
