Wood Finishes & Plywood Flashcards
- wood finish
- emphasizes and enhances the charm of natural wood color and grain
Transparent
soak into the wood pores to give a natural look and feel
Penetrating finishes
seals wood pores for protection against water and other destructive elements
Surface coating
- wood finish
- forms a high gloss film on surface when dried
- resin + ethyl alcohol
Clear lacquer
- wood finish
- gives a relatively hard, tough, and elastic finish
- resin + oil
Varnish
- wood finish
- LAC flakes + denatured alcohol
Shellac
- wood finish
- simply boiled linseed oil or various other oils
Oil Stain finish
- wood finish
- transparent plastic finish made of polyhydric alcohol with oleic, linoleic, palmetic and fatty acids etc.; applied in layers
- very tough, hard and flexible finish; superior resistance to chipping, abrasion
Polyurethane finish
- wood finish
- achieved by brushing, rubbing, spraying processed fatty acids with alcohol
- comes in paste and liquid form
Wax or Films
- wood finish
- dyes or pigments suspended in water or oils, it alters coloring of the wood or accentuates its natural color without covering the grain
Wood stain finish
- wood finish
- by applying one of the various acids and chlorine compound
Bleach finish
- type of bleach finish
- comparative weak; excellent for removing chemicals, dyes, and ink from wood surface
Chlorinated laundry bleach
- type of bleach finish
- best bleach to use on natural wood colors
Oxalic Acid
- type of bleach finish
- fairly affordable and extremely strong
- can bring out lighter tones on dark wood
Two-solution bleaches
- wood finish
- gives a solid finish for protection and decoration
Opaque
mixture of a solid pigment suspended in a liquid vehicle, when applied to surface, forms an adherent continuous film which provides protection, decoration, sanitation, identification.
Paints and enamels
- ingredient in paint
- insoluble substance that imparts color and opacity to a paint
Pigment
- ingredient of paint
- non-volatile fluid
Vehicles
- ingredient of paint
- volatile fluid used to dilute paint and varnish to desired consistency
Thinners
- ingredient of paint
- added to paint to accelerate oxidation and hardening of vehicle
Driers
- made of thin veneer sheets glued together one on top of the other with grain of sheets arranged crosswise
- available in 4’x8’ (1200 x 2400 mm) boards; 1/8” - 1” thickness
Plywood
a series of wood core strips glued together side by side to form a slab which is sandwiched between other layers of veneer or thin plywood
Plyboards
composed of wood chips carefully graded, mixed with synthetic resin glue and either pressed or extruded into grid
Particle boards
- engineered wood product made out of wood and fibers
- have been used extensively in the building industry for many years in various densities
- MDF is an example
Fiber boards
same construction as fiberboards except that it has a thin outer press melamine finish
Melamine boards
- refers to thin layer of wood which is cut from the circumference of a tree
- available in 3-6 mm thick
