MDF advantages
Cheap, various thickness, recycling of waste wood, veneers and laminates can be applied.
MDF uses
Block models, small bases, building and furniture, kitchen units.
MDF disadvantages
Goes soggy with water, heavy, dust is produced when sawn.
Chipboard advantages
Inexpensive, comes in normal, medium and high density forms.
Chipboard disadvantages
Not very strong, brittle, easily damaged edges, difficult to shape, finishes poorly, becomes waterlogged and not strong.
Chipboard uses
Work surfaces in kitchen, flat pack furniture, internal fire doors.
Hardboard advantages
Not expensive.
Hardboard disadvantages
Brittle, goes soggy with water, tears easily, difficult to finish, not strong, only smooth on one side.
Hardboard uses
Covering panels, levelling floors.
Plywood advantages
Very strong as layers are at 90 degrees to each other, stable, good quality finish.
Plywood disadvantages
Can spilt when cut if becomes wet, usually more expensive than boards, if no finish applied knots can fall out.
Plywood uses
Containers, flooring, flat pack furniture, boats.
Block board advantages
Cheaper than plywood, good resistance to warping.
Block board disadvantages
Not strong.
Block board uses
Furniture, kitchen cutting boards.
