What is a softwood
Come from coniferous trees, have needles and do not loose their leaves in winter.
Pine- colouring, uses, properties
Light yellow and open grain.
Expensive furniture, structural timber, flooring, toys.
Not very strong and has no resistance to decay or bugs.
Larch- colouring, uses, properties
Yellow
Building construction, railroad crossties, roofing, boatbuilding and furniture.
Stiff, strong, hard, heavy, dense, not susceptible to shrinkage, sanded to smooth finish, tendency to warp.
Cedar- colouring, uses, properties
Orange/ red colouring with a straight grain.
Fencing, roofing, cladding, decking, musical instruments and furniture.
Durable, lightweight, stable, has a low shrinkage percentage and density. Plus naturally resistant to decay and has highly insulating properties.
Redwood- colouring, uses, properties
Red
Panelling, decking, barns, bridges, sheds, cladding.
High strength to weight ratio, semi-durable, lightweight, rot resistant.
