Performance Characteristics Flashcards
What is Conductivity
Conductivity is the ability of a material to conduct or transmit heat, electricity or sound.
What is Stregnth
Strength is the ability to withstand force or pressure without breaking.
There are lots of different ways to categorise strength: tensile - withstand stretching, compressive - withstand being squashed and shear - withstand failure of a force or weight.
What is Elasticity
Elasticity is the ability to return back to its original shape after being put under a force or stress.
What is Plasticity
Plasticity is the ability to undergo permanent deformation when subjected to stress, without returning to its original shape once the force is removed.
What is Malleability
Malleability is the ability to be hammered, pressed, or rolled into thin sheets without breaking or cracking.
What is Ductility
Ductility is the ability to undergo significant deformation before breaking or fracturing, typically through stretching or elongation.
What is Hardness
Hardness is the ability of a material to withstand indentation, abrasion or scratching. The harder it is the longer it will last against deformation.
What is Toughness
Toughness is the ability of a material to withstand a sudden impact or shock without fracture or breakage. The more hits that are needed to break a material, the tougher it is.
What is Durability
Durability is the ability to withstand wear and tear from usage. The more durable something is, the longer it will last.
What is Biodegradability
Biodegradability is the ability of a material to decompose after interactions with microorganisms.
