Wood Flashcards
Name trees that contain resin
-pine
-fur
-spur
Describe fur wood
Hydro fuse wood and will not rot as fast as pine and will repel water
Describe pine wood
-Old buildings used pine wood floors
- it is the most produced wood in Canada
-pine is a soft wood , so easier to work with
What should you do before buying wood
Check moisture In wood to avoiding warping
Name 4 types of ways wood is cut
- Plainsawn
- Quartersawn
- Riftsaw
4 livesawn
What is the most used cut of wood and what properties will not make it warp
-Quatersawn is most used
- the harder the wood the less prone to warpage
What is MDF
-Medium Density Fiberwood
- manufactured wood used for floors, dressers (furniture) and you can pain over it.
-combines wood fibres with resin
What is HDF
-High Density Fiberwood
- manufactures wood used for insulation, soundproofing
Name 3 su trap materials used
- MDF
- Plywood
- Particle board
Explain the manufacturing MDF process
- Wood chips are washed to remove dirt and bugs
- Then heated to turn into uniformed fibres
- fibre drying
- After the hot press, they are placed in the cooling wheel
- Finishing
*sometimes they keeps the wood chips to make panels which are called particle board
- a lot of ikea furniture uses particle board
- can’t pai. Over cause it’s very choppy and soaks all the paint like a sponge
What is melamine
A plastic finish they add on wood
What is plywood
- Plys of different t layers of wood
-they are called floating floor because you clip them in over a floor.
- cross grain type
-the more layers, the thicker it’ll be and the stronger
- can go up to 10-15 plys
- used In Flooring and furniture
-best uses in basements
Pro of plywood
Stats stable during humidity
What are the steps when putting in wood floors
Stack vaneer with plywood and then a different wood material
Name 3 types of wood floors
- White maple
- Birch
- Oak
Describe white maple wood
Very easy to stain, very hard and affordable. Can be in high food traffic area
Describe birch floors
It is the softest floor and cheapest
Describe oak floors
Are softer and cheaper than white maple
What do they put on particle board
Melamine (cheaper
Can get any colour but very easy to chip
What is used to glue laminate sheets together
Contact cement which is then glued on plywood or particle board
How is laminate (HPDL) made
-multiple layers are fused together under high heat (paper is included) which is layer of craft paper with resin
1. Paper is coated with resin and dried in ovens
2. Decorative paper is cut and melamine is applied on top to seal
3. Phenolic treated Kraft paper is added to the layers
4. Then they are all pressed with heat and sanded together (the heat Melts the resin so everything sticks together
What is P.M.S
Panton match system matches the colour exactly when you want a specific colour
