Cabinetry Flashcards
What is HPL and describe it
-High Pressure Laminate
-wide selection of colours, patterns, textures and finishes.
-usually sorted by solid tones, patterns and wood grains and then special features or finishes
What are some special features of HPL
Can include a solid core (no brown edges), extra durability, anti microbial properties and market board surfaces
What are some finishes of HPL
Range from super matte to glossy, with many faux texture options in between
Pros and cons of HPL
Pros: affordable, durable, easy to clean and maintain, resilient to scratches, stain proof
Cons: doesn’t add resale value, can start to lift over time, has a low resistance to bacteria (unless special feature applied), chemicals and corrosion
Describe solid wood
-Has been used for decades and is a great option for kitchen cabinets.
-it will last longer than manufactured wood product - medium density fibre wood (MDF), which combines wood fibres with resin.
Pros and cons of solid wood
Pros: provides almost same beauty as real wood grain, provides a superior structural strength and long lasting
Cons: more expensive.
-since they expand and contract both vertically and horizontally when temp and humidity rise and fall, cabinets, doors and panels made from solid wood require careful consideration to avoid warping and cracking
