Who were the suffragettes?

A

They were a group of women who were campaigning for women’s suffrage

What methods did the suffragettes use?

A

They believed in deeds not words. Their methods were disruptive such as firebombing politicians houses, setting letterboxes on fire (main way of communicating), destroying churches, refusing to eat in prisons and many more.

What did the prison guards do when the women refused to eat?

A

They force fed the women with tubes into their stomachs. If the women were really ill the prison would send them home as they wouldn’t want the women to be seen as martyrs. This was called the ‘Cat and Mouse act’
