Who were the suffragettes?
They were a group of women who were campaigning for women’s suffrage
What methods did the suffragettes use?
They believed in deeds not words. Their methods were disruptive such as firebombing politicians houses, setting letterboxes on fire (main way of communicating), destroying churches, refusing to eat in prisons and many more.
What did the prison guards do when the women refused to eat?
They force fed the women with tubes into their stomachs. If the women were really ill the prison would send them home as they wouldn’t want the women to be seen as martyrs. This was called the ‘Cat and Mouse act’
What are martyrs?
People who are willing to die for their beliefs, faith or views.
What were the women who worked in munition factories called?
Munitionettes
Who was the founder of the suffragettes?
Emmeline Pankhurst, a previous suffragist who wanted immediate change.
When was the suffragettes formed?
1903
When were women given suffrage?
In 1918 property owning women over 30
In 1928 all women over 21
Who was Emily Davidson?
She was a suffragette who killed herself during a horse race (the Derby) by running in front of the King’s horse, As she ran in front, she shouted “Votes for women”
When was the start and end of WW1?
1914 - 1918
Why did women take men’s jobs?
Because they were needed to fight for the army
Who helped advertise the need for female labour?
Emmeline Pankhurst who was enlisted by Lloyd George (the PM and a victim of the suffragettes firebombing)
Why did women enjoy their jobs?
It gave them freedom, their own income and it was exciting (dangerous)
