How did education change for girls between 1870 and 1900?
Before 1870 girls could not attend school. By 1900, 97% of children could read and write
What did young girls learn if they attended school?
Domestic chores suitable to look after a man: ironing ,preparing porridge and how to make gravy.
What did most married women have to spend their time doing?
They had to get a job in textiles, homes or a telephone switchboard operator for 80 hours a week.
What did the luckiest women do by the end of the 19th century
- Telephone switchboard
- Typist
Why was employment unfair on women?
Women earned less than a man e.g Civil Service typists (mens wages= £3 a week) (Womens=£1 a week)
What changed and what remained the same for Women by the end of the 19th century?
-Women were excepted into universities (Jex Blake-Edinborough)
+Women were not allowed a degree
What does marriage reveal about the position of women in society?
- Legal for husbands to beat and rape their wives
- Wives could not divorce her husband
- if a man divorced their wife, the wife would lose custody of her children
