WMM Flashcards

1
Q

What’s the central executive?

A

Head of model, receives sense info and filters before passing on. CE is limited in capacity, only one strand of info at a time. Switches attention between different inputs.

Q

Phonological loop, what is it?

A

Deals with auditory sounds info, limited capacity and confusion occurs with similar sounding words. There’s 2 parts:
1)primary acoustic store: inner ear dealing with words recently heard

2) articulately process- inner voice, keeps info through vocal repetition.

Q

Visio-spatial sketchpad.

What is it?

A

“Inner eye” limited capacity, visual info. Split into:
1) Visual Cashe: a passive store of form and colour

2) inner scribe:: active store, relationship between objects and rehearsal.

Q

Research on CE:

A

Pts asked to generate random list of number while also at melting to switch between typing number and letters on keyboards.
Found that pts had difficulty in completing both tasks at same time.
Shows dual task performance in low and CE is limited in capacity and can only cope with one type of info at a time.

Q

Research on phonological loop.

A

Baddely: pts were visually shown 5 word lists with short exposure, then asked to write down in same order.
1st condition: words like “bond” “yield”
2nd condition: longer words like “opportunity”
Found significant increase in recall for short words.
Shows capacity of PL is not the number of items but the time it takes to say the word. Known as length effect.

Q

Research on visuo spatial sketchpad.

A

Klauer and Zhao:
Gave pts visual task of remembering Chinese ideographs or special task of remembering location dots on screen.
Same time they also have visual or spatial interference task. (same processing)
Found: spatial memory more disrupted by spatial interference.

Q

Research on PL and VSS.

A

Case study of both SC and KF who after brain damage both STM issues with functioning of PL but VSS was not affected.
Shows PL and VSS are separate and located in separate brain regions.
