Types Of LTM Flashcards
What’s episodic memory?
Declarative memory
Memory of experiences and specific events
What’s semantic memory?
Explicit memory
Facts, meanings, concepts and knowledge about the external world.
What’s procedural memory?
Implicit memory
Unconscious memory of skills and how to do things.
Describe episodic memory.
Recalled consciously and can be expressed in words.
Memory is stored with reference to time and place
Describe semantic memory.
Facts and knowledge abt external world.
Recalled unconsciously
Memories are stronger
Lasts longer than episodic
Describe procedural memory.
Unconscious memory eg riding a bike.
Often learnt in childhood
Hard to express in words
Research for separate episodic and semantic.
Herlitz gave male and female tasks that tested either episodic LTM or semantic LTM ability and found that females are better on episodic tasks. Shows difference in performance and suggests they are different processes.
Research on procedural LTM.
Separate to episodic and semantic
Finke, case study of brain damage. Found that his episodic and semantic were affected but ability to red and play music were unaffected, including new pieces. Shows procedural is separate to episodic and semantic.
AO3 on types of LTM.
Lacks sufficient controls to suggest cause and effect relationship between brain areas and memory functions.
