WMM Flashcards
Name the different parts of the working memory model
Central executive /visuospatial sketchpad/ phonological loop/episodic buffer
What is the role of the central executive?
Control centre which coordinates the slave systems (controls and directs information / problem solving)
What is the role of the visuospatial sketchpad?
Stores both visual and spatial information
Has a capacity of 3-4 items
Ao3 what is a strength?
case study of KF
What did they find in KF case study
After a motorcycle accident he lost the ability to form verbal memories but could still form visual memories
Digit span was 1
Suggests that the phonological store was damaged
Supports the concept that STM has separate stores
What is a weakness of KF
Case studies focus on specific cases in unique situations of brain damage and memory impairments
Can’t be accurately and ethically replicated
Data difficult to compare due to individual differences
What does the phonological loop do?
Split into the phonological store (inner ear/ which stores acoustic information)
The articulatory control system (inner voice- stores info we want to maintain or speak)
What is the episodic buffer?
Manipulates info by recalling it and integrating from STM to LTM
Strength of this
What were the findings
Another strength / application
What is an alternate theory
MSM
What is MSM
Linear processing system which suggests that information is encoded both acoustically and semantically
Passed from 1 STM A store to 1 LTM store
What is it also?
More detailed explanation of memory
Suggests that the two types of memory have seperate components such as the episodic buffer and articulatory control system
