Wk7 - Mandibular nerve Flashcards
Describe/draw the mandibular nerve and its branches.
See notes.
What are the branches of the anterior division of the mandibular nerve?
-Nerve to masseter (masseteric nerve)
-Deep temporal nerves
-Nerve to lateral pterygoid muscles
-Buccal nerve (long buccal)
What does the masseteric nerve do?
Innervates the masseter
Also provides sensory branch to TMJ
What do the deep temporal nerves do?
Innervate the temporalis muscle
Note: don’t confuse with the superficial temporal nerves (the temporal branch of the facial nerve)
What do the superficial temporal nerves do?
(branch of facial nerve)
-innervates frontalis muscle, part of orbicularis oculi and procerus muscles
What does the nerve to lateral pterygoid muscle do?
Enters both heads of the lateral pterygoid muscle to innervate them
What does the buccal nerve do? (long buccal)
Sensory info to the cheek
Note: DONT CONFUSE WITH BUCCAL BRANCH OF FACIAL NERVE
What does the buccal branch of the facial nerve do?
Innervates the buccinator muscle, orbicularis oris and the zygomaticus muscles
what does the nerve to medial pterygoid do?
innervates the medial pterygoid muscle, tensor veli palatini and tensor tympani.
What does the auriculotemporal nerve do?
Sensory supply for sensation to the TMJ and carrying on to supply the skin to the anterior ear
Describe the posterior division of the mandibular nerve.
Auriculotemporal nerve branches off
Splits into the lingual nerve and inferior alveolar nerve
Nerve to mylohyoid (+ anterior belly digastric) given off just before I.A.N
Chorda tympani joins onto lingual nerve
What does the lingual nerve do?
sensation to the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue (including taste due to chorda tympani)
Describe the chorda tympani.
Fibres with info about taste from anterior 2/3rds of tongue (joins onto lingual nerve)
Parasympathetic fibres that make submandibular and sublingual fibres secrete
