Lymph nodes Flashcards
Describe the posterior auricular/retro-auricular nodes.
Drains the ear and side parts of the scalp
Describe the occipital nodes.
drain posterior part of the skull. If were to have lice and scratch a lot might have swollen occipital nodes
Describe the parotid/pre-auricular nodes
drain superficial structures above line shown (in front of ear)
Describe the jugulodigastric nodes
think of it as a deep cervical node. Drains palatine tonsil which is why it is so big as palatine tonsil very active.
Describe the submandibular lymph nodes
drain superficial structures below dotted line, most of the oral cavity, paranasal cavities – maxillary sinus.
Describe the submental lymph nodes
drain front part of lower mouth, front of floor of mouth, chin, lower lip and incisors
Describe the jugular omohyoid nodes
is one of the deep cervical lymph nodes and drains the tongue. Can be a sign of tongue carcinoma
Describe the superficial cervical lymph nodes
drain local superficial structures and drain to the deep cervical lymph nodes
Describe the deep cervical lymph nodes
receive lymph from superficial nodes and drain the deep areas of the head (posterior part or tongue, oropharynx, thyroid gland)
Describe the supraclavicular nodes
can be enlarged due to infection further up in the head or neck but also have connection with chest so concerned about infection here. Common for oesophageal or stomach cancer to spread to these nodes.
What node is enlarged here? Where would you want to check?
Submandibular
Oral cavity - ulcers, malignancy
Face, paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity
Where will this suspicious lesion drain to?
Probs submandibular
If was further back would have gone straight to the deep cervical nodes
What nodes are enlarged here? What would you be concerned about?
Supra-clavicular nodes
Worried about chest and in older patients worries about malignant spread from oesophagus or stomach
