Wk.4 L4 - Calorie Restriction Flashcards
LO
- Outline different diets that can mediate calorie restriction
- Explain important caveats of calorie restriction studies in model organisms
- Outline some of the published effects of calorie restriction on longevity in animal models
Impact of Dietary Restriction on aging-associated dissorders
Dietary interventions:
- Ad Libidum (free access)
- Intermittent fasting (Fast every other day)
- Calorie Restiction (50% less food)
- Time restricted feeding (9am-3pm feeding)
- Macronutrient ratio changes (zero carbs)
Calorie Restriction Studies
Most popular studied:
- Calorie Restriction (1980s started research)
- Intermittent fasting (2000s started research)
Animal models:
- Calorie restriction on rats found it extented their lifespan
- Ad Libidum always had food availible
- Cal. Restricted was given all food at one time
This can be argued to beintermittent fasting as they fast 50% of the time as well as 50% less calorie intake
Good evidence in non-human primates
- Clostest to humans in lifespan extension
- Calorie restriction extended their lifespan significantly by checking on age-related diseases
Fasting Mimicking Diet
Extends healthspan in mice
- Similar to intermittent fasting
- Statistically significant evidence to age-related diseases being lower and longer lifespans
Calorie Restriction benefits
- Neurodegenetive diseases
- Cancers
- CVD
- Excess adiposity and diabetes
- Kidney disease
- Autoimmune disease and inflammation
All decreasing, therefore extending healthspan and lifespan
