Wk.4 L1 - Mortality and Death Flashcards
LO
- Describe key medical advances that have increased human lifespan
- Outline the major causes of death in Australia
- Explain how longitudinal studies have identified key risk factors for disease
Causes of death in Australia over time
- Cancers
- CVD
- Infectious disease
- Injury and Poisoning
- Resp. disease
- Vaccine preventable disease
2022 Major causes of death in Australia
Males:
15-24 Suicide
45+ CVD
Females:
15-24 Suicide
45-74 Breast cancer
74+ Dimentia
Australian deaths from CVD
Peaked at 1950/60s across both genders
- Steady decline in deaths per 100,000s after 1960s
Framingham heart study
Goal was to find factors that could be altered to reduce peoples risk of CVD in 1950s
Prospective longitudinal study:
- Took very large population
- Collected data potentially related to CVD
- Monitored people over time and see when they get CVD
- Check CVD people with their specific factors at time zero to see if there’s correlation
Found that higher blood pressure was related to CVD
