covariance
does the variance in scores in one variable reflect the variance in scores in another?
positive covariance
as the variance in one variable increased, the variance in the other also increases
negative covariance
as the variance in one variable increases the variance in the other decreases
why we use standardised tests
covariance is relative to the unit of measurement (unstandardised measure of relationship) so we use a correlation coefficient to standardise it.
sun of squares
measures how far individual measurements are from the mean
subtract each measurement from the mean , square the difference and then add all the resulting measurements.
also measure the amount of variability in the data
