wk 8 Flashcards
phonological loop split into two systems:
phonological store: stores memory traces for a few seconds before they fade
Articulatory / phonological loop: rehearsal process analogous to subvocal speech (inner voice)
difference between auditory and visual info entering phonological store
- auditory words (heard) enters straight into phonological store and then is rehearsed via articulatory process.
Visual words (read) converted through articulatory process and then placed into phonological store
Brooks Matrix Task (1967):the second result is that, in the non-spatial condition(to the “quick” of the starting square, place a 2), recall of the sentences is better with written instructions; whereas in the spatial condition (to the right of teh starting square, place a 2), performance is better with spoken instructions> this implies that the
visual writing interferes with the visuo-spatial representation; or, it’s easier to build up a visuo-spatial representation from spoken instructions than from written instructions.
less interference
LoP made a distinction between 2 types of rehearsal
type 1 = Maintainance rehearsal (e.g: repeating)
type 2= Elaborative rehearsal (deeper processing)
only type 2 associated with increased retention
