Wk 3 - Synovial Joints Flashcards
What type of cartilage is usually found at synovial joints?
Hyaline cartilage
What two components make up the joint capsule?
Synovial membrane (inner) Fibrous membrane (outer)
What is the function of articulations discs?
Absorb compression forces
Adjust to changes in the contours of joint surfaces during movements
Increase ROM
What are the classifications of synovial joins in terms of shape?
Plane Hinge Pivot Bicondylar Condylar Saddle Ball and socket
What are the classification of synovial joints based on movement?
Uniaxial
Biaxial
Multiaxial
What movements occur at plane joints?
Sliding/gliding
What movements occur at hinge joints?
Flexion and extension (in one axis) (e.g. elbow)
What movements occur at pivot joints?
Rotation (e.g. Atlanto-axial joint)
What movements occur at bicondylar joints?
Movement in mostly one axis and slight rotation in another axis (e.g. knee)
What movements occur at condylar joints?
Allow movement around 2 axis - flexion, extension and abduction, adduction and circumdation (e.g wrist)
What movements occur at saddle joints?
Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction and circumdation (carpometcarpal joint of the thumb)
What movements occur at ball and socket joints?
Flex, ext, abd, add, circumdation and rotation (e.g. shoulder)
Where are suture joints found?
The skull, where adjacent bones are linked with thin CT
Where are gomphoses found?
Between teeth and adjacent bone
Where are syndesmoses joint found?
Radius and ulna link (any two adjacent bones are linked by a ligament)
