Q

Why are stabilizing and destabilizing drugs both detrimental to microtubules?

A

Microtubules must be able to grow AND shrink appropriately to build functional structures.

Q

What is topoisomerase 1?

A

Topo 1 nicks DNA, stores the ATP required to make the nick, covalently attaches to the DNA,
-as replication fork comes along, Topo 1 jumps out of the way
-if Topo 1 doesn’t jump out of the way fast enough -> ds break

Q

What is topoisomerase 2?

A

-can do everything Topo 1 can do and -
- pass DNA strands through one another
- to get apart, must make ds break
- can solve replication problems
- -essential role in mitosis
