WIRED TRANSMISSION METHODS Flashcards
What are the names of the 3 wires?
UTP/STP, Coaxial, Fibre optic
What is the cable UTP/STP?
Unshielded twisted pair is a cable made up of copper wires twisted together.
What is the cable Coaxial?
Solid copper wiring with thick shielding
What is the fibre optic cable?
Glass or plastic cables which use light to transmit data
What are the advantages of UTP/STP?
- Cheaper than other methods
- Reliable
-Interference is lessened due to the twisting
What are the disadvantages of UTP/STP?
- Slow
- Low capacity
- Used over short distances
What are the advantages of Coaxial?
- Reliable
What are the disadvantages of Coaxial?
- Slow
- Low capacity
- Used over short distances
What are the advantages of Fibre optic?
- Fast
- Used over long distances
- Little interference
What are the disadvantages of Fibre optic?
- Expensive
- Complex to install
Examples of uses for a UTP/STP cable?
Connecting computers to a network backbone
Examples of uses for a Coaxial cable?
TV networks e.g. TV to a aerial
Examples of use for a fibre optic cable?
Backbone of a network
