DATA EXCHANGE - TRANSMISSION MODES Flashcards
What are transmission modes?
Ways in which devices on a network communicate with each other and transmit data
What are the 3 types of transmission modes?
Simple/ full-duplex/ half-duplex
What is the SIMPLEX transmission mode?
Signals go in one direction at a time
What is the FULL-DUPLEX transmission mode?
Signals go in both directions at the same time
What is the HALF-DUPLEX transmission mode?
Signals go in both directions but the devices don’t transmit at the same time
What is the data transfer of a SERIAL transmission mode?
Bits of data are transferred one at a time over a wire
What is a benefit of a SERIAL transmission mode?
Good over large distances
What is a limitation of a SERIAL transmission mode?
Complex because data has to be broken down into individual bits
What is the data transfer of a PARALLEL transmission mode?
Bits of data are transferred at the same time over a wire
What is a benefit of PARALLEL transmission mode?
Faster because more bits are transferred per second
What is a limitation of PARALLEL transmission mode?
Shorter distance, maximum about 5 metres
