After Winton “went through a brick wall” he realised how he is not only motivated by being grateful towards life but now motivated to pursue his passion of writing as in “one sudden moment (he) went harder at the writing game than anybody could believe”. The metaphor of a “writing game” further indicates how this “game” is a competition with himself and motivates him to challenge preconceived assumptions of trauma, enabling him to authentically pursue his writing career.

Winton effectively reflects on his past within “Eventually a sense of seamless predictability- a life without wildness - is a kind of sleepwalking”, whereby the pause created through the caesura reveals his realisation that his traumatic endeavours as a child enabled him to reconcile with the past to appreciate the power of storytelling as an avenue for rumination.
