The sight of this man being hauled aboard a small boat, threshing and hailing in a slather of blood was to say the least galvanising”, harrowingly coveys the visceral messages of sharks in media through the flashback depicting how it has lead to an underlying fear of these creatures, and how it is innate in our human behaviours to vilify the unknown.

individuals in society in, “The year 2011 was the worst for fatal shark attacks in Australia in living memory. Four people lost their lives”, in comparison to the “1292 Australians killed” in car accidents. The use of contrast coupled with logos gives commentary on his awareness of death, and how Winton is motivated to speak out for these fragile creatures, although rampant deaths are more prevalent in common aspects of life such as car accidents, sharks have the greatest media portrayal, linking to human behaviours of how we have an underlying fear of the unknown.

Winton’s personal experience with the shark is explored in “Then I feel the sandpapery grind of it as it turns in panic and flees”, the tactile imagery effectively allows the audience to experience what winton is feeling, displaying how contradictory we are to animals, as it is a mutual fear between us and the sharks.
