Cote Rotie AC

  1. Most North (500M) sun exp all day + Soil retains heat
  2. Narrow terr on st slopes (60%) 2nd steepest after Mosel
    1. C Blonde: Sandy Lime over Granite = racier wines, 15 yrs
    2. C Brune: Iron-bearing Sch over Granite, more Intense/Tannic min 10yr ageing needed, can last 30 yrs
  3. 2-3wks F. + 18-36m Mat
  4. D Colour, intense dark fruit, violet, spice, velvety
  5. up to 20% Vio but most often 5%, if any.

Cote Rotie AC – 235ha (R)

  1. Most northerly vineyards in Rhone. 500m hi & can be exposed to the sun all day + soil retains heat
  2. Narrow terraces on steep slopes – up to 60% gradient -> 2nd steepest vineyard slopes after Mosel
    1. Cote Blonde: sandy limestone over granite →racier wines, approachable early, 15yr lifespan
    2. Cote Brune: iron-bearing schist over granite more intense & tannic, not ready before 10yrs, 30yr lifespan
  3. 2-3wks fermentation + maturation for 18-36mths
  4. Generally deep coloured, intense dark fruits, violet & spice, velvety texture.
  5. Up to 20% of Viognier authorised in the blend but most often 5% if any.

Condrieu AC (3)

  1. Steep Slopes, terraced, sandy granitic soils (arzelle o/clay), constant ventillation prevents rot
  2. Low A, Hi Alc - Peach, Apr, rosewater, candied citrus, drink within 5 yrs
  3. E. Guigal: 40% Prod

Condrieu AC - 130ha (W)

  1. Steep slopes w terraced vineyards on sandy granitic soils (arzelle over clay). Constant ventilation prevents rot.
  2. Low acidity, high alcohol and flavours of peach, apricot, rose water & candied citrus. Best drunk within 5yrs.
  3. E. Guigal: ~40% of production

Chateau Grillet (3)

  1. Ampi Th, S Estate, S/Facing steep terraces, granitic soil, protect from N winds
  2. Grapes picked early, F. at hotter temp with MLF, aged in W for min 6m.
  3. More austere wine, longer age pot, hi price

Chateau Grillet AC – 3.8ha (W)

  1. Amphitheatre single estate with south-facing steep terraces made of granitic soils. Protected from northerly winds
  2. Grapes are picked earlier, fermented at hotter temperature with MLF and aged in wood for min. 6mths.
  3. This creates more austere wines but with longer ageing potential and commend v high prices.

St Joseph (3)

  1. Less steep, cooler plateau, large volume
  2. lighter + fruitier w/blackcurrant + rasp, some intense tannic style
  3. 90% red, small amount of W from Mar + Rou

St Joseph – 1,000ha (R/W)

  1. Grown on less steep banks of the Rhone and also on the cooler plateaux for large volume production
  2. Lighter & fruitier style w blackcurrant & raspberry notes but some growers design intense tannic style too.
  3. 90% red production; small percentage of whites from Marsanne mainly & a hint of Roussanne.

Crozes-Hermitage

  1. Situated at top of Herm, flat, less shelter from M wind
  2. 15% W grape allowed, but normal 100% Syrah
  3. Lighter, less int vs Herm, mature quicker
  4. 90% Red, 10% floral FB wine
  5. 60% co-op Tain L’Hermitage, Rest from Neg, ie, Jaboulet Ainé

Crozes-Hermitage AC - 1,400ha (R/W)

  1. Situated at the top and behind the slopes of Hermitage. Mostly flat with less shelter from the Mistral wind.
  2. 15% of whites grapes allowed in the blend but normally 100% Syrah
  3. Lighter & less intense wines vs. Hermitage. Will mature quicker.
  4. 90% or red wine 10% full bodied floral whites.
  5. 60% of production comes for the cooperative of Tain L’Hermitage. Rest from négociants e.g. Jaboulet Ainé.

Hermitage (6)

  1. History - since Gallo/Roman times, Some Bdx were ‘Ermitagé’ for extra strength, Depth + Col
  2. Various climats, dif alt, exp and soil. Best sites steep, S/facing w/sunshine all day, granitic soil. Non-gran soil for whites
  3. 15% W allowed in blend, normal 100% Syrah
  4. Style - Deep Int Powe wines, approachable 10+yrs, age up to 30yrs
  5. 75% red prod, top white from Mar + Rou
  6. Tain L’Hermitage Co-Op accounts for 1/3 of prod, Chap + J Ainé follow

Hermitage -140ha (R/W)

  1. Vines cultivated since Gallo-Roman times but reputation dates back from 18th century. Some top Bordeaux at the time were ‘Ermitagé’ for extra strength, depth and colour.
  2. Various climats with different altitudes, exposures & soil types. Best sites are steep southerly slopes with sunshine all day & granitic soils. Non-granitic soils used for whites.
  3. 15% of whites grapes allowed in the blend but normally 100% Syrah
  4. Deep intense powerful wines; approachable at 10+ years and can age up to 30+ years.
  5. 75% red production but top white made from Marsanne & Roussanne.
  6. Tain L’Hermitage cooperative accounts for 1/3 of production; Chapoutier and Jaboulet Ainé follow.

Cornas (6)

  1. N/W of Valence v/y in S/Facing amphitheatre (suntrap + prot from wind)
  2. Granite soil on v st terrace support by retaining walls
  3. Overtaken by neighbours H + HC in popularity
  4. Must be 100% Syrah
  5. Similar to Herm (FB + Int) more rustic, faster mature
  6. Jean-Luc Colombo intro use of new oak + de-stemming in 80s

Cornas – 110ha (R)

  1. Northwest of Valence vineyards in south-facing amphitheatre (suntrap & protection from winds).
  2. Granite soils on very steep terraces supported by small retaining walls.
  3. Overtaken by neighbours Hermitage & Crozes Hermitage in popularity (no superstar producer).
  4. Must be 100% Syrah.
  5. Similar to Hermitage (full bodied & intense) but a bit more rustic & faster maturing (min 6-8 yrs and max 20).
  6. Jean-Luc Colombo introduced the use of new oak barrels & destemming in 80s

  2. Owns 230ha in Northern Rhone incl. 32ha in Hermitage. All vineyards biodynamic –> largest in the world
  3. Low yields, oak ageing (new when appropriate) and no filtration or fining.
  4. Top wines: white Hermitage, Ermitage Le Pavillon & Cote Rotie La Mordorée.
