Desktop
The surface that is shown on a computer screen when the computer is turned on. Icons and windows appear on this.
Window
A term used with computers to describe the rectangular-shaped spaces that open when working with files, folders and programs.
Taskbar
The horizontal bar at the bottom of a computer desktop, which shows open and active/inactive programs and processes.
Start button
The button at the far left of the taskbar. Clicking on this brings up the start menu.
Start Menu
A menu that provides computer users with a list of icons for programs to be used and actions to take.
Windows button
A button on the keyboard that performs the same function as the start button.
Title bar
The top bar in a window where the title of the program, folder, or title is displayed.
Icon
A symbol or illustration appearing on the computer screen that represents a program, file or folder.
Left pane
The left side of the Start Menu. Presents a list of programs that can be opened.
Right pane
The right side of the Start Menu. Presents a list of actions to take and places to go in the Windows system.
Recycle Bin
The computer’s trash can, where unwanted files and icons can be placed.
Search Box
A space where search terms can be typed.
Control Panel
A place where a computer user can manipulate programs, devices, settings and other issues related to the performance of their computer.
Default
A preset, or the automatic setting of a program or system.
Notification
Information that your computer periodically provides that relates to a program, system or setting.
Pop-Up
A notification or advertisement that comes up on your computer.
Active
Used to refer to a window or program that is in use.
Minimize
Hide a window so that it only appears on the taskbar.
Restore
Bring an inactive window from the taskbar to open and active status.
Jump list
A short menu that appears when you right click got a program. It shows your actions you can take and recent files associated with that program.
Adobe Reader
Computer software that lets you open and read pdf files.
Application
Computer software that performs a task or set of tasks, such as word processing or drawing. These are also referred to as programs.
Freeware
Computer software distributed without charge.
Shareware
Computer software distributed without initial charge but for which the user is encouraged to pay a nominal fee to cover support for co tinted use.
