Wind Patterns Flashcards
Convection currents
The circular movement of hot and cold liquids and air
Sea breeze
Warm air above land rises, cooler air from the sea moves from over the sea and replaces it, while giving the land a breeze, a sea breeze is a type of convection current because it is in a circular flow of warm and cold air
Land breeze
The warm air above sea rises, cooler air on land moves over the sea to replace it, while the land is giving that sea a breeze, it is creating a convection because it is moving in a circular flow and it is hot and cold air
Criollos Effect
Objects in the Southern Hemisphere objects are deflected to the left and in the Northern Hemisphere they are deflected to the right, this is caused by the rotation of the Earth
Jet Stream
It is a band of wind that is moving at a high speed. It moves from east to west in the southern hemisphere and in the northern hemisphere it goes from west to east
Trade winds
They are winds that blow towards the equator and the warm air from the equator takes its place
Doldrums
It is a spot near the equator and it has very few winds
Polar Westerlies
Winds that blow away from the equator,
They go from the west to east (WEEEEE!!!!!),
They are over the USA
Prevailing winds
Winds that blow away from the equator, they bring warm air to the poles
Polar Easterlies
Winds that are found near the poles, they are also winds that blow east to west
Gulf Stream
It is an ocean current that brings warmer temperatures to the eastern coast of the USA. They are found in Atlantic Ocean
El Niño
A band of warm ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America, it can cause drouts, warms up climate
La Niña
A band of cold ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America, it can cause precipitation and it cools down the climate
