Wind Patterns Flashcards
Convection Currents
Gasses (Air) and liquids (water) rise (^ ) and sinks (|) in a circular path.
( | ) (V)
Sea Breeze
Its when warm air rises and cold air sinks during the day.
Land Breeze
Its when warm air rises and cold air sinks during the night
Jet stream
A band of very fast moving wind caused by differences in temperature
Trade Winds
Winds that blows toward the equator
Doldrums
A spot neat the equator where there are very few winds
Coriolis Effect
The rotation of Earth causes objects in the northern hemisphere to deflect to the right while objects in the Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left
Prevailing Winds
Winds that blow away from the equator.
Brings warmer air to the poles
Prevailing Westerlies
Winds that blow away from the equator
Blow west to east
Found over the U.S.
Polar Easterlies
Winds that are found near the poles
Winds that move east to west
Gulf Stream
An ocean current that brings warmer temperatures to the eastern coast of the US. Found in the Atlantic Ocean.
El Niño
Band of warm ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America (Pacific Ocean)
Can cause droughts
Warm up climates
La Niña
Band of cold ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America (Pacific Ocean)
Can cause more precipitation
Cools down Climates
