Weather Symbols And Tools Flashcards
Air Mass
A large body of air with similar properties all through it.
Maritime Polar Air
Even though the ocean near the poles is cold, water vapor evaporates into the air. An air mass forming over the poles is cold and moist.
Continental Tropical Air
A large hot desert can cause the air above it to be warm and fairly dry.
Continental Polar Air
The land near the poles is not very moist. So, the air mass from this area is cold and fairly dry.
Maritime Tropical Air
Humid air has lots of moisture. Over tropical oceans or rainforests, an air mass becomes warm and very humid because water can easily evaporate there.
Fronts
Boundaries between two air masses
Warm Front
Warm air mass meets and overrides a cold air mass.
Cold Front
Cold air mass meets and causes a warm air mass to rise.
Anemometer
Measures wind speed
Hygrometer
Measures moisture in the air (Humidity).
Barometer
Measures air pressure
Low pressure: Cloudy/Rainy
High pressure:Sunny/Fair weather
Rain Gauge
Measures amount of rainfall
Radar
Measures wind and precipitation inside of a storm
Wind Vane
Tells wind direction
Thermometer
Measures temperature
