Wind Patterns Flashcards
Convection Currents
Gas and liquids rise and sink in a circular path
Land Breeze
When the sun sets, the land cools off faster than the sea. The warm air above the sea rises. Cooler air from the land moves toward the sea to replace it. This causes a land breeze
Sea Breeze
When days are sunny, the land heats up faster than the sea. The warm air above the land rises. Cooler air from over the sea moves in to replace it. This causes a sea breeze
Coriolis Effect
The rotation of earth causes objects in the Northern Hemisphere to deflect to the right, while objects in the Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left
Jet Stream
A band of very fast wind that is affected by differences in temperature
Trade Wind
Winds that blow towards the equator
Doldrums
An area around the equator that has very little wind
Prevailing Winds
Winds that blow away from the equator.
Prevailing Westerlies
Winds that blow away from the equator going from west to east
Polar Easterlies
Winds that are found near the poles and they move east to west
Gulf Stream
Ocean Current found in the Atlantic Ocean that brings warmer temps to the East
El Niño
Band of warm temps that develop on the coast of South America. In the Pacific Ocean
La Niña
Band of cold temps that develop on the coast of South America. In the Pacific Ocean
