Willis Flashcards
Willis on names
The one who names another has the power to ascribe purpose to the named. God names man, man names woman and animals, parent names child, God names nature (polemic against nature cults?)

Genealogies unbroken?
Son may mean descendant, as in Ezra 8 and 1 Chronicles 26. Author never claims literal accuracy
Enûma Eliš and Genesis 1-2
Mesopotamia: gods and matter are coeternal, create firmament, light, man, chaos first
Contrasts between EE and Gen
Biblical inspiration is compatible with borrowing from existing traditions and thought patterns.
Lit contrasts: warring gods vs The Omnipotent, man as caretaker of gods vs man dependent on God, myth vs mixed natural and R truth
Gen 1-2 not contradictory because
The author, having presented panoramic creation, restated humanity as the most important part. Our reading order does not reflect the original
Knowledge of God and evil =
Knowledge to pride to lack of dependence on God. Man couldn’t handle it. Rather than sex, simple shame, moral right/wrong (Adam should know beforehand), godlike knowledge, full mental powers
Knowledge good/evil and Willis’ reasoning
Jives with nephilim, babel, and God’s combat of them
God delays in creating woman?
God builds (literally) woman for man after Adam finds no helper within animals. Exalts woman
