Collins Biologos Flashcards
6 tenets of TE
1 universe ex nihilio 14b y ago
2 despite massive improbabilities, universe seems disposed to life
3 while origin of life is unknown, life arose through natural processes over a long period of time
4 evolution needs no supernatural intervention
5 man arose from evolution with common ancestor(apes)
6 moral law, search for God, etc, points to man being spiritual in addition to being evolved
Proponents of theistic evolution (TE)
JPII, Asa gray, theodosius dobzhansky
Objections and responses to TE
“If TE is so great why isn’t it ubiquitous?” Well, no public advocates because TE is too synthetic for media, too liberal for nsci, too esoteric for R. Bad name (Biologos instead)
“Does violence to sci and R” well, not God of gaps; rather, God is telos and origin of science
“Why would God use godless evolution?” Well, that’s a human view. God, who is outside time, can guide evolution and know human outcome
Scriptural objections to Biologos
Use literary framework.
Cain’s expulsion suggests other people. Gen 2-4 is powerful allegory for ascension of the spirit. CSLewis says Gen 2-4 is a moral tale of evolution->spirit and rationality->Fall
“The God of the bible is the God of the genome”
Extreme materialism or spiritualism diminishes the potential of mankind. God cannot be at war with Himself.
