Wilhem Wundt Flashcards
Who is Wundt also known as?
The father of psychology
Why is Wundt known as the father of psychology?
He was the first to study psychology in a scientific way which had influenced many more future psychologists through his studies.
He was also the first to set up a psychology lab in the university of leipzig in Germany.
What is introspection?
Introspection is the examination/observation of a persons thoughts or feelings
What did Wundt do in his experiments?
He utilised introspection by introducing a stimulus to his patients as they would self-report their own emotions and sensations. He would then compare the responses from each participant and draw conclusions from the similarities and differences
How did Wundt make his experiments scientific?
He used a standardised procedure in a controlled environment, making it more reliable as the EVs would not affect the DV
How was being scientific in psychology advantageous for Wundt?
Being scientific means that it is easier to find the cause and effect relationships between the stimuli and the conscious experiences of his subjects, this is because his experiments were repeatable.
What were the weaknesses in Wundt’s studies?
His method of using introspection was fully dependant on what his subject say (subjective). This led to the school of structuralism being short lived and not giving enough of an insight on human conscience
